Post by aukepalmhof » Sat Mar 20, 2010 2:48 am

The ship of the line "AZOV" was built in Arkhangelsk, built by the shipbuilders I.A. Kurochkin and V.A. Ershov for the Russian Imperial Navy.
20 Oct. 1825, keel laid down.
26 May 1826, launched. She was named after a battle where the Russian army and navy made a victory against the Turkish navy and army at "AZOV" in 1696. http://www.neva.ru/EXPO96/book/chap1-4.html
Displacement 3.000 ts, dim. 54.5 x 14.7m. Armament 4 - 40pdrs, and 70 - 24 and 36pdr. guns.
Crew 600.
She was built of the best timbers, and carried a 3.5m warrior with golden helmet and armour as a figurehead. On her taffrail was carved a two-headed eagle. One of the most beautiful ships of the Russian Navy.

"AZOV" was flagship in battle at Navarin. The first man- of-war to win the right to fly St George's ensign was the ship-of-the-line "AZOV", whose crew, fighting under the command of Captain Mikhail Lazarev, distinguished themselves in the sea fight with a Turko- Egyptian squadron in Navarin Bay in 1827. Lieutenant Pavel Nakhimov, Ensign Vladimir Kornilov and Midshipman Vladimir Istomin, who served on the "AZOV", displayed particular gallantry and military skill in that battle. The "AZOV" was awarded the right to fly St George's ensign "in honor of the praiseworthy deeds of her commanders, the valor and fearlessness of her officers and the bravery of her crewmen" The Web http://www.sadcom.com/pins/article/r_collective.htm

Lazarev commanded several war-ships, including the glorious ship "AZOV" which, in 1827, showed such heroism in the battle at Navarino against the Turkish and Egyptian fleet. Lazarev's ship had to fight five enemy ships. It sank most of them thanks to its splendid gunners. For this battle Lazarev was made a rear-admiral.
During the Battle of Navarino she was under command of Capt. M.P.Lasarev (one of the discoverers of the Antarctic continent) and she was flagship of read-admiral L.P.Geiden. During this battle on 08 Oct. 1827 she destroyed five Turkish vessels. History of the battle you can find:

She was heavily damaged in this battle and did not see any service again. 1831 broken up

Denmark 1983 FDC The Russian Ship of the line "AZOV " and a Frigate at Anchor in the roads of Elsinore is a painting by the Danish painter, C. W. Eckersberg. It was painted in 1828.
The work is not an accurate rendition of the scene but a construction, using more than one event as the basis for the painting. For instance, Eckersberg moved the scene from Copenhagen where he had inspected such ships to Elsinore as is evident in the picture as Kronborg is seen in the background.
Eckersberg was very meticulous in preparing the painting, however. He studied these ship types beforehand, borrowing technical drawings from the naval dockyard. The process is documented in Eckersberg's diary.

“The Russian ship of the line Azov at anchor in Elsinore.”
Artist: Eckersberg, Christoffer-Wilhelm (1783-1853).
The 74-gun ship of the line Azov became a hero of the naval Battle of Navarino (1827), when allied forces of Britain, France and Russia defeated Ottoman and Egyptian fleets. The ship, led by discoverer of Antarctica Mikhail Lazarev, destroyed five enemy warships, including the Ottoman 80-gun flagship.
The Azov became the first ship in the Russian Navy to be awarded the special Flag of St. George, one of the highest awards any ship could get.
