GAIASSA Nile boat

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon May 31, 2010 8:52 pm

The Federated States of Micronesia did issue two Souvenir Sheets on the History of Sailing in 2005.
The $2 sheet depicts a “lateen-rigged Nile riverboat.”

By comparing the stamp with an image in the book Aak to Zumbra she is a GAIASSA.

Used in Egypt as a bulk cargo vessel on the River Nile, she sails upstream with the prevailing northerly wind and drifts downstream with the current; she is also used on the Suez Canal and in the Red Sea.
Flat bottom; bottom planks brought up about halfway up the stern; keel at ends only. Bow blunt to almost flat; height varies greatly; now generally a slight sheer at bow.
Sides flared; flat sheer and low freeboard. Maximum beam well forward, tapers aft to a transom stern.
Thin planking nailed to stout ribs; sheating of planks over the ribs forms a hold. Some now made of steel and are called SANDALS.
High bulwarks stop before the transom proper, ending in a sort of false transom; bulwarks may be set back for polers.
Huge rudder controlled by a long, thick, 2-piece tiller that lashes to the rudder.
Individual boats identified by colors on the mast and yard top.
One to three masts; most have steps on the side to enable crew to climb aloft. Some mast can be struck, especially on the single-masted craft.
Lateen sails; on some, the foresail and mizzen are quadrilateral lateen-type sails with a short luff, or the mizzen may be a quadrilateral sail. The exceedingly long main yard is in 3 pieces, lashed together. Sail may be boomed out forward; outrigger aft. High point of the bow holds the lifting tackle. On recent steel hulled vessels, the lateen sail may be boomed at the foot. Also poled or rowed.
Crew 2-3.
Reported length 7.6 – 24m; e.g. length 17m, beam 3.7, depth 1.0m.
