Valiant HMS

Post by john sefton » Sun Jul 18, 2010 9:39 pm

HMS VALIANT was built by Fairfield and Engineering Company at Govan. She was completed in 1916 and saw service with the Grand Fleet under Admirals Jellicoe and Beatty. She also took part in the Battle of Jutland.
After an extensive refit just before the War, she joined the Home Fleet; and in July 1940 she joined Force H. Later she joined the Mediterranean Fleet to bombard Valona.
In 1941 she saw action against the Italian Fleet off Cape Matapan sinking the cruiser Fiume and crippling the cruiser Zard.
In 1943 she again became part of Force H. In that year came her involvement with the landings in Scilly and mainland Italy.
In 1944 she joined the Eastern Fleet and took part in the bombardment of Sadang. The following year saw her back in the UK for a refit which was not completed until after the cessation of hostilities. She was broken up in 1948.
Log Book November 1984.
