W F BABCOCK. Full Rigged ship. Built 1882 by A Sewell & Co. Bath. Mass. also owner. 2130Gt. 1993Nt. L24O'8pp. B43'8". Dr19'3". 3 masts. Full rigged with skysails. Oak hull. Engaged in general cargo and wheat trade to and from Californian ports. Later converted to Schooner rigged sea going barge working along Atlantic coast.
Acquired by US Navy 18 Oct 1917 from Luckenback Steamship Co.
Commissioned as Collier 8 Nov. Operating in 5th Naval District until 8 Aug 1918.
Stricken from Navy List 20 Nov 1919. Sold to Reinhard & Hall.
Her name disappeared from shipping registers at about same time.
Stamp design taken from painting of the ship sailing through the Golden Gate by W A Coulter commissioned by Home Fire & Marine Insurance Co. San Francisco ‑ U.S.A. 1922.
