1894 Plans were made to commence a ferry service between Portobello and the area of Port Chalmers, New Zealand, and the Peninsular Ferry Company was founded.
The order to build a new ferry was given in 1909 to John Mcgregor & Company at Dunedin, after an other ferry of the company the MATARIKI had caught fire and burned out to the waterline.
Launched as the WAIKANA.
Tonnage 154 gross, length 120ft.
Powered by 230 hp steam engine, the engine was salvaged from the burnt out MATARIKI.
Accommodation for 800 passengers.
1909 Completed.

After delivery used for the ferry service in Otago harbour but also used for harbour sightseeing or moonlights cruises.
1925 In collision with the WAIREKA in Otago port, an other ship of the company
When during the mid twenties the company had to compete against bus and automobile services, and the competition heated up, the Peninsular Ferry Company was dissolved and the WAIKANA was sold.
Sold to R Miller of Otago, who used the vessel occasionally.
End 1931 laid up at the Quarantine Island near Otago.
Not sure what happened with her afterwards most probably slowly deteriorating till she was beached, a recent photo gives her it looks partly on the beach as a complete rusty wreck.
