J G GRAVES OF SHEFFIELD lifeboat

The lifeboat on the 2½d stamp issued by Great Britain for the ninth international life-boat conference in Edinburgh is identified as the J G GRAVES OF SHEFFIELD.
Built by William Osbourne at Littlehampton for the RNLI in 1958.
She was the first of the Oakley class lifeboats, named after Richard A Oakley the RNLI surveyor of lifeboats, who designed a carriage launching lifeboat.
Displacement 30 ton, dim. 11.28 x 3.51m.
Powered by twin P4M diesel engines.
07 June 1958 she sailed for trials from Littlehampton.

A total of twenty-six were built, she was designed as a self-righting lifeboat. Hull made of African mahogany.
From 1958 till 1978 at the Scarborough lifeboat station.
From 1978 till 1988 in service as a relief lifeboat.
From 1988 till 1991 at the Clogger Head lifeboat station.
From 1991 till 1993 in service again as relief boat, thereafter taken out of service, she was the last of the Oakley lifeboats taken out of service.
In total she was launched 124 times and saved 14 lives.
April 1996 she went on display in a dry-berth at the Chatham Historic Dockyard.

The 17th Century lifeboat on the 4d is not identified till so far.
