MADELEINE yacht 1876

Built as a wooden centre-board schooner rigged sloop in 1868 by the designer and builder David Kirby at his Rye shipyard in New York for the New York modeller Jacob B. Voorhis.
Launched as the MADELEINE (the only yacht in the America’s Cup named after a woman.)
Displacement 152 tons, dim. 32.20 x 7.35 x 2.05m. length on waterline 28.96m., during the 1876 America Cup.

1870 She was slightly altered on the builder’s yard. But when she in August of 1870 took part in the America Cup challenge off New York against the British challenger CAMBRIA and not was the winner, Voorhis decided to alter the schooner again in 1871, the work was carried out by John E. Smit on his shipyard at Nyack, New York. In 1873 and 1875 again taken to the yard in which the yacht was lengthened by 5.2 metres and the freeboard increased by 35 cm.

1876 Was she owned by John S. Dickerson, Commodore of the Brooklyn Yacht Club.

The MADELEINE was the defender of the third America Cup race in 1876 against the Canadian yacht COUNTESS OF DUFFERIN.
11 August 1876 the first race took place in the waters off New York. The MADELEINE was skippered by J.Williams. The race which easily was won by the MADELEINE with a lead of 10 minutes and 59 seconds.
12 August 1876 the second race took place which also was won by the MADELEINE, she finished 19 minutes ahead of the COUNTESS OF DUFFERIN and the America Cup stayed in the USA.

After winning the America Cup she was for a short time used for racing but early 20th century she finished racing.
She was then registered in Tampa Florida and fitted out as a merchantmen, then used as a supply ship for the sponge fishermen under the ownership of Levin Denton Vinson.

On a voyage from Tarpon Springs bound for Tampa under command of Captain Scaurly she sank in the Hillsborough River on 01 September 1911.
At that time her tonnage was 79 tons with dim. of 28.19 x 7.31 x 2.13m.
The wreck was abandoned and slowly disappeared in the mud of the river.
