Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Mar 25, 2011 7:58 pm

The drakkar was a large fast Viking longship, she was longer than the longships, and mostly only owned by kings who could afford to build them.
By the enemies she was called dragon ships.
She was not only used as warships to carry out the raids on other countries, but transported also the settlers on the Normandy coasts and in the conquest of England in 1066.

She was built until the mid-13th century.
Double ended, clinker built. Flat floors.
Open but may have a raised deck in the forepeak. Later types had sometimes castles.

Carried a high stem and sternpost during raids generally topped with a fierce dragon.
The type were classed according the numbers of rooms they had, which corresponded with the number of transverse beams or thwarts., and therefore, the number of pairs of oars employed.
Reporter to have had 25-40 rooms.
When under sail set a pole-mast stepped amidships, which carried a large square sail.
Length to circa 55 metres.
