INTREPID 12m class yacht 1967

Built as a 12-metre class wooden yacht by Minneford Yacht Yard in City Island, New York for W.J. Strawbridge syndicate.
Launched May 1967 as the INTREPID.
Tonnage 29 tons, dim. 19.66 x 3.72 x 2.78m. (draught), length on waterline 14.25m.
Sail area 158.13 square metre.
Built with white oak frames and mahogany planking.
Designed by Sparkman and Stephens. Building cost $1 million US dollar.

The INTREPID won 18 of her 19th trial races against the COLUMBIA, CONSTELLATION and AMERICAN EAGLE.
She was the defender of the America Cup in 1976 under skipper Bus Mosbacher against the Australian yacht DAME PATTIE under skipper Jock Sturrock.
The races took place on 12, 13, 14 and 18 September 1967.
The DAME PATTIE was beaten in each race in the waters of New York.

For the America Cup 1970 was she rebuilt, her length increased with 60 cm, and tonnage 32.5 tons, sail area was reduced to 162.58 square metre.. The new design was made by Britton Chance.
The INTREPID easily won the selection trials against the AMERICAN EAGLE, HERITAGE and VALIANT
She was again the defender of the 1970 America Cup, when she under skipper Bill Ficker sailed against the Australian yacht GRETEL II under skipper Jim Hardy, in the waters off New York.
15 September by the first race the INTREPID beat the GRETEL II by 5 minutes and 52 seconds. On the first race the GRETEL II got in trouble when her spinnaker pole broke, and one of her crew members fell overboard.
20 September the GRETEL II beat Intrepid by 1 minute 07 seconds. The GRETEL II was disqualified for “barging on the start”, and the INTREPID wins.
22 September the INTREPID beat the GRETEL II by 1 minute and 18 seconds.
24 September in the fourth race the INTREPID beat GRETEL II by 1 minute and 02 seconds.
28 September the INTREPID beat the GRETEL II by 1 minute 44 seconds.

The INTREPID won its second America Cup.

1971 Sold to International Geographic Foundation, with homeport Miami.
1974 She won the Caritas Cup organized by the NYYC and the Lipton Memorial Trophy, at that time she was owned by The Seattle Sailing Foundation, with homeport Seattle.
She raced in the 1974 America Cup defense selection trials, she was before the trials redesigned by S&S.
During the trails she was under command of skipper Gerald Driscoll.
She was very near to be the next defender in the America Cup, but lost from the yacht COURAGEOUS under skipper Ted Hood.

From 1977 till 1978 owned by Robert H. Fender.
1978 till 1980 owned by Pierre Goemans on behalf of the French Baron Bich and “Association Française pour la Coupe de l’America (AFCA).

1980 Renamed in WINDANCER with homeport Luksegon, Michigan. She sailed on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain and was for charter.

1993 - 1996 Owned by Intrepid Sailing Inc.

1997 Owned by America’s Cup Charters. She was completely rebuilt during a two year restoration by Herb Marshall, George Hill and the shipwright Louis Sauzedde at Brewer’s Cove Marina in Barrington, Rhode Island. Most probably then again renamed in INTREPID.

2001 New rig fitted on INTREPID and it raced in the America’s Cup Jubilee regattas in Cowes, Isle of Wight, England.

2011 The INTREPID is availed for charter out of Newport, Rhode Island, skippered by Mike Patterson. Her owner is given as Paul Gary Gregory from Marblehead, Mass. Managed still by America’s Cup Charters.
