In 1979 Sweden issued a booklet GOTA KANAL, named Sweden's Blue Ribbon, the stamps show different views around the canal. The canal was dug out during 1810- 1832 and is worth a chapter of its own with its 58 locks, history and expectations.
Regular traffic started in 1834, but one can say that it all began in 1869, when the company MOTALA STROMS ANGFARTYGSBOLAG was founded. The company was renamed in 1889 ANGFARTYGS AB GOTA KANAL and in 1957 the name was REDER I AB GOTA KANAL. During all the years business has been up and down, owners and shareholders have come and gone, but the company is proud and in 1994 celebrated the 125 years and an anniversary book was published.

One of the stamps in the booklet features JUNO, a ship from the old days and still going strong.
JUNO was built at Motala Verkstad, Motala, Sweden as a passenger steamer and was delivered in 1874. She was later rebuilt in 1905 and in 1956, when she became a motor ship.
Her dimensions are 29.65 x 6.74 x 2.82m. with a GRT of 304. Number of passengers is 125.
The name JUNO is from Roman mythology and she was Jupiters wife. The month June takes its name from Juno.
JUNO is still in service on the same route, the same name, the same shipping company, even though its name today is CANAL ROUTE AB ... The record is unbeatable!
