DORIS

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Nov 07, 2011 8:42 pm

The DORIS is used in St Pierre et Miquelon and she is modified from the bank dories brought from the United States in the 1870s.
Motorized doris for offshore cod fishing were introduced in the early 1930s.
Fishermen often used the term doris to designate any fishing boat that engages in coastal fishing.
Lapstrake construction with flared sides; longitudinally planked flat bottom with strong rocker.
Mostly now-a-days made of plywood.
Sharp bow, raked and slightly curved stem, enclosed by the planking.
Trapezoidal transom, mildly pointed at the top; strong sheer.
Decked at bow and stern.
Three fixed thwarts set onto sturdy stringers. Outboard rudder hangs below the bottom; tiller on those with an inboard engine.
When rowed use two pairs of tholepins.
May step a short aft-racking mast through the forward thwart
Length between 6 – 8.2m. beam at gunwale 2.18m at bottom 1.1m., depth 0.9m.
