L'ESPÉRANCE 1781

Built as a snaw at Toulon for the Royal France Navy.
June 1780 laid down.
14 August 1781 launched as DURANCE one of the Rhone class.
Tonnage circa 350 tons. Dim. 37 x 8.3 x 4.2m.Armament 6 – 8 pdr., and 2 carronades.
Full rigged ship.
Crew 200.
30 October 1781 commissioned.

Used in Admiral Grasse squadron as a troopship.
When used for Bruni d’Entrecasteaux expedition was she reclassed as a frigate and renamed L’ESPÉRANCE.
29 September 1791 the ESPÉRANCE under command of Captain Huon de Kermadec and along with the La RECHERCHE she sailed from Brest for an exploration mission in search for Lapérouse to the South Seas.

28 October 1793 in Surabaya she was handed over to the Dutch, in February 1794 already handed back to France again.
September 1794 sold to the Dutch, and two months later sold for scrap.
