AVILA
Turbine steamer built and launched by Brown, Clydebank for the Blue Star Line, London. Completed 10 March 1927. She was placed in the London-La Plata service.
Yard No 514. 12.872Grt, Length 535ft. beam 68.2ft. Geared turbines. Two screws. 8,400shp. Speed 16 knots. 162 First class passengers.
In May 1929 she was renamed AVILA STAR, and in 1935 her forepart was lengthened, other alterations were done which made her 14,443Grt .. Length 597ft. overall. 150 First class passengers.
On 6 July 1942 she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-201 in the Atlantic in position 38degs 04' N-22degs.46' W. which resulted in 62 deaths (Date of sinking by British time: July 5)
