U-118 submarine (1941)

Built as a type XB submarine under yard No 617 by the Krupp Germania Werft, Kiel, Germany for the German Navy.
01 March 1940 keel laid down.
23 September 1941 launched as the U-118.
Displacement 1,763/2,177 ton surfaced/submerged. Dim. 89.8 x 9.2 x 4.71m. (draught).
Two F-46 diesel engines, 4,200 hp; two AEG electric motors, 1,100 hp, speed 16.4/7 knots.
Armament: 2 – 21 inch torpedo tubes, 1 – 37mm and 2 – 20mm guns. Carried 66 mines.
Crew 59.
06 December 1941 commissioned under command of KrvKpt. Werner Czygan.

Of the type XB were eight built and she were used for mine-laying and as support vessel.

06 December 1941 till 30 September 1942 a unit of the 4th Flotilla in a training program.
01 October 1942 in use as a front boat in the North Atlantic till she was sunk on 12 June 1943.
29 September 1942 was she attacked in the North Atlantic by aircraft which caused slight damage.
She sunk during her career in which she made four war patrols 3 merchant ships, one warship and damaged two merchant ships. All ships were sunk and damaged by mines laid by the U-118.

She was sunk on 12 June 1943 in position 30 49N 33 49W by depth charges from eight Avenger aircraft of the aircraft carrier USS BOGUE. Of the crew, 16 were rescued and 43 were killed under which the Captain Werner Czygan.
