3 COM (PRIDE OF TEESIDE)

Post by john sefton » Tue Jan 01, 2013 9:50 pm

The yacht depicted on this miniature sheet of Barbados with the sail 3COM is a Challenge 67 type, an all steel yacht built by Devonport Management Ltd yard.
The yachts were designed by David Thomas and Thanos Condylis.
14 Of this type were built on the same yard for the purpose of racing in the British Steel Challenge1992/93, a westbound yacht race around the world.
She was completed under the name PRIDE OF TEESIDE.
Displacement 40 tons, dim. 20.42 x 5.26 x 2.82m. (draught).
1 Auxiliary engine a Perkins 130 hp diesel engine.
Maximum sail area 441 square metre.
Crew accommodation for 14 persons.

The Global Challenge is one of the toughest yacht races for amateur sailors and covered a distance of around 29,000 mile.
The race in 1992/93 started in Southampton in September 1992 with 10 identical yachts all sailed by a crew of 14.
The PRIDE OF TEESIDE under skipper Ian MacGillivray finished as 5th in a time of 155d 16h 06m 48sec.
She took again part in this race of 1996/97 which then was named the BT GLOBAL CHALLENGE.
The yacht was renamed 3COM under skipper David Tomkinson.
This time 14 identical yachts took place in the race which started from Southampton.
The 3COM finished as 9th in a time of 171d 11h 57m 30s.
After the race she made some charter voyages in the Challenge Adventure Sailings to Spitsbergen, and acted as a safety vessel in the 1997 Ward Evans Atlantic Rowing Race. At that time I believe she carried still the name 3COM.
During her duty as safety vessel in a position around 200 miles off Barbados she lost her mast.
She later sailed from Barbados under a jury rig back to the U.K.
After this I lost track of the yacht but the Challenge company went in administration on 9 October 2006 and the yachts were then put up for sale.

Who can supply the missing details?
