Lamu dhow- other name Lamu jahazi.Lamu-built trader that works along the East African coast from Mogadisho in Somalia to Tanzanian ports; sailed to Bombay (Mumbai) with ivory until the late 1950s. Distinctive sharp, ver¬tical stem; mat weather cloth raises its low freeboard. Stem has cutaway forefoot and short stemhead projec¬tion. Carvel-planked; sewn with braided fibers and caulked with pitch; little sheer, round bottom, and a long, straight keel. Flat, generally wineglass transom. Undecked except for short apron forward and a larger quarter-deck; cargo may be covered by a mat roof that is lifted, wing-fashion, to the shrouds during loading and unloading. Quarter-deck protected while in port by a tarpaulin thrown over the lowered yard. Deep rudder worked by a wheel and a system of ropes and pulleys. Brown color of hull heightened by fish oil varnish; quickwork white, and rubbing strake black and red; oculus motif at bows and carved and painted boards at bow and stern. Toilet box often elaborately decorated. Flags flown from pole at stern and from rudderhead, and a long pennant from the masthead. A houri* towed or carried on board. Heavy, forward-raking mast secured against a beam just forward of amidships. Occasionally steps a mizzenmast during fine weather. A large lateen or quadrilateral lateen-type sail with a short luff, with vertical cloths, lashed to a long, multipiece yard and the stemhead. Sail tacks to the end of a long, fixed bowsprit; bowsprit lashed to the mast. A pair of shrouds on each side attach to the masthead by a rope that surrounds the top; lower ends secured to the gunwale and ribs; may be used as a der¬rick during unloading. Oars also available. Crew of ca. 12. Reported lengths 15-21m, widths 4.3-4.8m, depths 2.1-2.4m;
