The emblem on this submarine tower is the “laughing swordfish” first carried on U-96 later was it the 9th submarine flotilla based in Brest where a other 10 boats carried this emblem.
The stamp depict most probably the U-96.
Built as a submarine under yard No 601 by F. Krupp Germaniawerft AG, Kiel for the German Navy.
30 May 1938 ordered.
16 September 1939 launched as the U-96. One of the VIIC type.
Displacement: 769 ton surfaced, 871 ton submerged, dim. 67.10 x 6.20 x 4.74m. (draught)
Powered by two supercharged Germaniawerft 6-cyl. 4-stroke M6V 40/46 diesel engines, 3,200 hp, two AEG electric motors, 750 shp, speed 17.7 knots, surfaced and 7.6 knots submerged.
Range by a speed of 10 knots, 8,500 mile.
Armament 14 – 21 inch torpedo tubes, 4 fore and 1 aft. 26 mines. 1 – 8.8 cm deckgun with 220 rounds.
Diving depth ca. 220 m.
Crew between 44 – 52 men.
14 September 1940 commissioned.

During World War II she sank 27 ships and damaged 5.
30 March 1945 during an Allied air-raid on Wilhelmshaven sunk..
