GALIEA 1916

Built as a passenger/cargo ship under yard No 30 by Cantieri San Rocco di Muggia-Trieste for Austrian Lloyd.
19 March 1914 ordered.
05 February 1916 launched as the PILSNA. One sister the KRAKOW.
Tonnage 8,040 grt, 6,843 dwt, dim. 131.90 x 15.6 x 7.90m., draught 7.73m
Powered by two triple reciprocating expansion steam engines, 4,600 hp, twin screws, speed 13 knots.
Accommodation for 150 first class, 47 second class
23 December 1916 completed, homeport Trieste. Hungarian flag and registry.

During World War I not in service but laid up in Trieste.
July 1919 in the service between Trieste via Venice, Brindisi, Port Said, Aden, Colombo, Penang, Singapore, Shanghai, Kobe and Yokohama.
April 1921 transferred to Italian flag and owned by Italian Lloyd.
September 1923 converted from coal to oil firing.
From June 1932 in the liner service from Italy to Istanbul.
1934 Converted for the service and emigrant trade to Palestine, passenger capacity increased to 440 passengers in three classes.
16 February 1935 renamed in GALILEE.
01 January 1937 transferred to the newly formed company Adriatica S.A. di Navigazione in Venice still in the service to Palestine.
25 January 1940 laid up in Trieste.
10 April 1940 chartered by Lloyd for use as an Italian Government transport.
When Italy got on 14 November 1940 in war she returned to Adriatica S.A. Navigation where after she was used for troop transport from Italy to Albania and Egypt.
28 March 1942 she sailed from Piraeus and Patras with on board troops to Bari.
28 March 1942 she left the Corinth Canal with on board 1,275 men most troops but also some Greek prisoners of war.
The same day she was torpedoed by HMS PROTEUS on her starboard side below the bridge in hold No 2, she got a 6 by 6 metre hole in her hull and quickly got a list of 15 degree.
The order was given to abandon the vessel but due to bad weather and a shortness of lifeboats many troops were lost. On 29 March at 03.50 a.m. the GALILEE sank in position 39 04N 20 05E and she took with her 991 men only 284 men were rescued.
