Galea grossa(Galea large)

Large galleries are purely Venetian invention and intended primarily for commercial purposes . Even name the exact date of the invention : whether in 1294 , or 1298 . However, to say that after that date, all goods movements Venetian merchants were made on large galleys impossible. For a long time yet urgent transport and transportation of valuable goods carried by standard galleys , in particular , they transported gold from Tunisia . In these cases, the high cost of carriage on usual galley , where there were large crews , but a small cargo , could be acceptable. The large galley , developed since the thirteenth century, appeared much larger than the thin helmet of war, with the presence of two high racks fore and poppae entrenchment of a place to shelter from amidships to let the soldiers. It was basically a compromise between military and commercial uses, which made the galley "big" particularly useful to a profitable transport of valuable goods traded with the East. It was long about 50 m wide and 7, for about 25 banks of rowers. They were equipped with two, but more often three masted sailing , as well as the tradizionaliremi , used in upwind sailing , or in the doldrums during the fighting. The system of “Mude”, especially given the weight of the ship, compared to other types of galley was to scaloccio , with five rowers bench for agents on a single oar. The largest volumes of cargo made these galeas are ideal for commercial activities , allowing , however , due to increased maneuverability and security offered by oars, a greater defensive ability than the round ships to sail. The galleys were then used primarily for the transportation of merchandise to a certain value and were used by the Italian maritime republics as the main element Мude , that the caravans used in maritime trade, often to protect the nucleus of round ships and sometimes with the addition an additional supply of galleys . The biggest were the galleys of type "Flanders", intended for the carriage of goods to the Netherlands. The larger merchant galleys and became stronger than their dependence on the sails, the greater the contrast between the rig and sails standard galleys merchant her sister. By the middle of the XV century rigged merchant galleys already resembled sails caravel. In March 1569 the Senate of Venice organized the sending of the next caravan merchant galleys to Beirut. This convoy was destined to be the last in the public convoys Venetian Republic , which has nearly three-century history . Symbol of economic prosperity of Venice, galley convoys under public control of the Republic ceased to exist just before the Battle of Lepanto , which became a turning point on the way from the galley to the Navy fleet sailing .
