Nave quadra

The second ship, which describes medieval scholar Michael of Rhodes is "Nave Quadra" (first- to see"Nef Latina"), which he repeatedly calls "Chocha" or "Kog"."Сog" reflects the Atlantic origins of this kind of high-sided vessel. The word "quadra" refers to the square sail it carried.
This ship would have seemed doubly advanced in Atlantic waters. Not only did it have two masts; it also carried a square sail on the mainmast and a lateen sail on its mizzenmast.
In XIII-XIV centuries in the Mediterranean there is an urgent need for a significant reduction of the cost of shipping while maintaining , and where possible increase in carrying capacity of the sailing ships . The result is a new modification of the nef , which quickly turns into a relatively independent type of ship – “Cocca”. The main difference between the new ship from its predecessor were square-rigged (Mediterranean Nawa , as we recall, was the Latin sail ) and the steering wheel mounted on the stern-post (as opposed to a pair of rudders Navajo ).Contours of the new ship became less round , which improved its seaworthiness . However, the ratio of its length to width ratio remains small. . In later centuries, the design of these vessels constantly changing , and the beginning of XVI century Venetian four-masted nave had quite a perfect body shape and large dimensions: the maximum length of 28.7 m , length at waterline 25 m, maximum width of 8.36 m, draft up to 3 m , displacement of about 600 tons fok and mainmast carry square sails , mainsail and second mizzen mast - Latin . The total sail area was more than 770 m2. This rig allows you to walk quite close to the wind . Large aisles unlike other ships had several anchors (up to 7 ) to prevent the demolition during stops . Built coсca how and skills of all sizes. Some of them had a displacement of 1,500 tons, which allows you to put on board 700-800 and even more people. Initially, cargo ships for maritime trade , coсca soon became widely used as warships.
