San Martin-galleon 1567

Post by Anatol » Wed Dec 03, 2014 10:32 am

When in 1580 Portugal came under the rule of the Spanish King Philip II, the Portuguese had just finished construction of a large galleon San Martin. He was known to the Spaniards as San Martin. At the time of formation of the Spanish Armada, San Martin was the best of the ships and was chosen commander in chief, the Duke of Medina Sidonia as the flagship of its fleet. San Martin had a total length of about 180 feet (60 m.) And a width of about 40 feet (13 m.). Sailboat had 48 heavy guns on two closed decks, as well as several smaller ones. Judging by the picture Hendrik Cornelis (Hendrik Cornelisz Vroom), stored in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich (England), San Martin had three masts - two square sails on the foremast and mainmast, with the Latin sail on the mizzen and Blind on the bowsprit. San Martin was badly damaged in the flared in July 1588 battle, when he attacked a group of British ships led by Sir Francis Drake. With the help of another galleon San Martinho left under fire, and passing through a fierce storm, brought back to Spain remains of the Spanish Armada. The ship returned in poor condition, his men were sick. Galleon was towed to the port of Santander.
