HOWLET ?

Post by aukepalmhof » Tue Jul 14, 2015 8:48 pm

This stamps issued in 1998 by Grenada of Grenadines which depict famous shipwrecks are taken I believe from the book “Gone with the Wind” written by Margaret Mitchell, or taken from scenes of the film.
(Image 40) Blockade runner wrecked on Sullivan’s Island North Carolina, not a name is given.
By the other stamp (image 41) is given HOWLET sinks off Charleston South Carolina 1865, I can’t find any ship under the name HOWLET. Many ships have sunk at Charleston around 1865, but the only vessel which sank at Charleston in 1865 is the paddle steamer RATTLESNAKE a blockade runner. But if she is depict?
The RATTLESNAKE was built in 1864 by John and William Dudgeon, London, U.K. for Collie & Company.
Tonnage 529 gross. Dim. 201.8 x 24.4 x 12,5 ft.
She was running aground while trying to enter Charleston Harbour in late January or early February 1865.
