Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Jan 06, 2016 7:24 pm

Built as a 5-masted full rigged steel sailing ship under yard No b811/01 by Stoczina Gdanska-Gdynia yard in Gdansk for a Polish owner. The ship is designed by the famous Polish ship architect Zygmunt Choren. With the intention when completed used mostly by the youth of upper Silesia, Poland as a training vessel, a sistership of the DAR MELODZIEZY.
04 December 1990 keel laid down.
02 August 1991 launched as the GWAREK.
Tonnage 4,425 grt, 1,000 dwt, dim. 132.7 x 16.3m, length bpp. 100.5m.
Auxiliary engines, two 16-cyl. Caterpillar 3516B SCAC diesels, 3.730 kW., speed 13.5 knots under engine power. One bow thruster.
Due to financially problems the GWAREK was not completed.
March 1998 the not finished ship was bought by the Swedish shipowner Mikael Krafft (Star Clippers, Monaco).
She was then lengthened and widened by the builder in Gdansk, before she was towed to the Dutch yard IHC De Merwede at Hardinxveld-Giessendam where she was fitted out and completed under yard No 681 as the largest sailing cruise vessel in the world.
Accommodation for 228 passengers.
Sail area 5,202,6 m².
17 July 2000 completed under the name ROYAL CLIPPER. Her owner is then given as Luxemburg Shipping Services, Luxemburg and managed by Star Clippers Monaco.

ROYAL CLIPPER is a steel-hulled five-masted fully rigged tall ship used as a cruise ship. She was designed by Polish naval architect Zygmunt Choreń, for Star Clippers Ltd. of Sweden, and built using an existing steel hull that was modified by the Gdańsk Shipyard. She was sold because of financial problems. The Merwede shipyard completed the ship's interior in July 2000. The renovations included frescography murals by Rainer Maria Latzke completing the ships' Mediterranean interior. Her design was based on PREUSSEN, a famous German five-mast Flying P-Liner windjammer built in 1902.
Star Clippers claims that she is the largest "true sailing ship" built since PREUSSEN. She is listed in Guinness World Records as the largest square-rigged ship in service, with 5202 square metres of sail. Her sails can be handled with a crew as small as twenty using powered controls.
ROYAL CLIPPER cruises the Mediterranean during the summer. During the winter she offers Caribbean trips through the southern parts of the Lesser Antilles area. Because of her size, she can visit smaller ports that larger (motor) cruise ships can't reach. Transatlantic crossings are available between seasons.
2011 Transferred to Malta International Shipping, Monaco not renamed under Malta flag and registry
2021 Given by http://www.equasis.org In service. Same name and owners, managed by Star Clippers Monaco. IMO No 8712178.
