PODOLSK (K-223)

The submarine on the stamp is the Russian submarine PODOLSK (K-223). NATO classification Delta III
19 February 1977 laid down as yard No 395 by the Sevmash shipyard at Severodvinsk, Russia for the Russian Navy.
30 April 1979 launched as the K-223.
Displacement 10,600 ton surfaced, submerged 13,050 tons, dim. 155 x 11.7 x 8.7m. (draught surface)
Powered by two pressurized water-cooled nuclear reactors, powering two steam turbines delivering 44,700 kW (60.000 shp) to two fixed-pitched shrouded propellers., speed 14 knots surfaced, 24 knots submerged.
Range Unlimited, except food supplies.
Armament: 4 – 533mm and 2 400mm bow torpedo tubes, carried 16 torpedoes or 24 mines. 16 launch tubes for R-29R ballistic missiles; MANPADS Strela-2M launchers.
Test depth 560 meters.
Crew 135.
23 January 1980 commissioned in the Russian Northern Fleet.

11 December 1980 transferred to the Russian Pacific Fleet.
In Nov – Dec 1980 the sub carried out transarctic interfleet cruise from Northern Fleet to Pacific Fleet.

Since Dec 8, 1989 till Apr 28, 1992 the sub had been under interim overhaul at Zvezda shipyard (Bolshoi Kamen, Far East).

In 1996 along with K-211 and K-530 submarines, she performed group firings by R-29R ballistic missile against a coastal target.
18 July 1998 she was renamed in PODOLSK when Podolsk city administration took her under her patronage.

On Sept 2, 2003 the sub launched ballistic missile from the Sea of Okhotsk against Chizha Range.

On Nov 14, 2004 a sailor died due to explosion onboard the sub. The reason was defective valve regulating pressure in freshwater tank. The sub's torpedo officer was adjudged guilty of negligence and sentenced for 2.5 years in penal colony.
2017 Most of her class are in reserve or scrapped but she is still in service.
