The Apostle Peter

Azov campaign of 1695 finally convinced Peter I that without the presence of the fleet he did not even possess a rather weak seaside fortress. Center of Shipbuilding has become the city of Voronezh. Here at the shipyard 15 miles from the confluence of the River Don in Voronezh was launched on the 36-gun frigate sailing-rowing "The Apostle Peter" in April 1696. The ship was built according to the drawings and with the participation of "a skilled master of galleys" the Dane August (Gustav) Meyer, who later became the second commander of the same 36-gun ship "St. Paul." The length of the frigate 34.4 m, width 7.6 m. The ship was flat-bottomed. The sides of the upper part of the body collapses inward, making it difficult to board the ship. Quarterdeck open on a cut-off tank remained the platform for boarding party. The ship had three masts with a top masts and bowsprit with Vertical jib-boom. Fore- and the main sail were lower sails and topsails. On the mizzen mast was only mizzen. In addition, there were 15 pairs of oars in case of calm and room for maneuver. "The Apostle Peter" 14 years quite successfully served in the Azov Fleet. In 1712, the Azov Sea Fleet ceased to exist after the unsuccessful Prut campaign. The fate of the ship "The Apostle Peter" is unknown, though Peter I ordered the "keep it forever as an example for the championship."
