GHE MANH CUA LO: A cargo dhow, she is used from the village of Cua Lo, Vietnam to Cape Falaise at the northern ends of the Brandon Bay, Vietnam.
The GHE MANH CUA LO, with her stem low in the water and gradually raising to the stern, her largest beam is after the midships. Her planking is fastened with iron spikes driven from the outside the interior surface of one plank through triangle holes into a drilled hole in the edge of the plank below.
The sternpost is a plank bent by a flame. The rudder pass through a narrow watertight box, which forms a rudder trunk. A lashing on the rudder stock prevent it from falling out of the bottom.
The triple chine hull is built up of successive planks. The frames and the bulkheads are fitted to the chines.
A deckhouse is fitted on the stern and the bow is decked with panels of woven bamboo.
Transverse strength is assured by a series of beams projecting through the hull below the rubrail.
Foremast rakes sharply forward while the main mast rakes slightly aft and is pivots on a pin, a little above the deck. Its step is held in a notch cut in a floor timber. The mainmast is topped with a wind vane. The sails are made of a series of curved bamboo battens, very closely spaced, sown on a sail mat of rushes. The sails are shaped much like an ear.
At the end of the summer season, many boats go up the Day estuary up to Namdinh for a cargo of rice, and return with the winter monsoon.
She is easy to handle, and guides itself at a steady pace for a long time without needing to adjust the helm.
