GALBAT

GALBAT was a Maratha Navy warship of the 18th century in India. She did have a long projected streamlined bow which easily cut through the water. And she could make good speed.
She were mostly rowed by ca. 50 rowers.
Steered by a rudder slung along the sternpost. The hull clinker built was when in contact with seawater made of sewn teak planks and secured by iron bolts. Keel also made of teak. The ribs and beams in the upper structure of the hull were made of jack, mango or undi wood.
The one or two masts were made of teak or punnai wood. Lateen rigged.
The hull was made watertight by coconut coir, undi and fishoil.
Tonnage 70 tons, dim. 27 x 5 m.
Armed with 6 – 8 guns of 2 – 4pdr.
Crew ca 22-25, soldiers 24-29 and 2 gunners.
The GALBAT was a coastal and inland warship and mostly used for close fighting or boarding.
