BOUNTY DAY

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri May 26, 2017 9:12 pm

The miniature sheet of this set of stamps has the following storey:

Of the three annual public holidays on Pitcairn, only Bounty Day on 23 January has its roots in the Islands history.
Nine months after Captain Bligh was relieved of command in one of the best known and most controversial mutinies in history HMAS BOUNTY arrived off Pitcairn on 15 January 1790. After a decision to settle permanently on the Island the mutineers ran the vessel ashore and stripped it of everything useful. On 23 January she was set on fire, BOUNTY burned to the waterline and sank in the bay which now bears her name.
On the morning of Bounty Day the young men build a rough and highly combustible model of the ship. Following a day of aquatic sports and a communal meal in the evening. The BOUNTY model is launched and fired less than a cable’s length from where the remains of the original Bounty still lie.
