Gibraltar HMS (Salvador)

HMS Gibraltar was an American 14-gun brig captured in 1779, then in turn captured by the Spanish in 1781and renamed Salvador, then recaptured by HMS Anson in 1800.

Built as a wooden brig rigged vessel, where and when unknown.
1779 Purchased by the Royal Navy, then given she was the American brig? VIRGINIA, armed with 10 guns.
Tonnage 85 ton (bm), dim length of gundeck 19.20m, beam 6.40m, draught 2.33m. length of keel 16.4m.
Armament 10 – 3 pdrs.guns.
Crew 45.
May 1779 commissioned as HMS GIBRALTAR under command of Lieut. Almerick Brown and stationed in the Mediterranean.
1781 When under command of Lieut. Walter Anderson taken on 18 April 1781 by the 36 gun armed xebec MUXCIANO off Gibraltar.
Renamed by the Spanish in SAN SALVADOR.
29 July 1800 retaken by HMS ANSON but not commissioned again in the Royal Navy.
Fate unknown.
