Gibraltar HMS 1711

HMS Gibraltar was a 20-gun sixth-rate built in 1711, rebuilt 1727, and sold 1748. It was the first command ofJohn Byng, who was aft erwards to be court-martialled and executed in the opening stages of the Seven Years’ War.

Built as a wooden 6th rate ship at the Deptford Dry-dock by Master Shipwright Joseph Allin for the Royal Navy.
24 January 1711 ordered.
18 October 1711 launched as HMS GIBRALTAR.
Tonnage 280 ton (bm), dim. 28.68 x 7.98 x 3.53m, length of keel 23.38m.
Armament: upper deck 20 – 6 pdrs. quarter deck 4 – 6 pdrs, when built.
Crew 115.
1712 Commissioned, under command of Captain John Shorter.

1714 Served in Ireland.
1715 – 1716 On convoy service to Newfoundland under command of Captain Edward Falkingham.
1717 Under command of Captain Beaumont Waldron in the English Channel.
March to July 1720 refitted in Deptford.
13 November 1724 surveyed and taken to pieces at Deptford in January 1725 to rebuild.

Rebuilt at Deptford Dry-dock by Master Shipwright Richard Stacey for the Royal Navy.
10 December 1724 ordered to rebuild from the old GIBRALTAR.
08 August 1727 launched as HMS GIBRALTAR.
Tonnage 374 ton (bm), dim. 32.31 x 8.65 x 2.80m., length of keel 26.79m.
Armament, upper deck 20 – 6 pdrs.
Crew 140.

July 1728 under command of Captain John Stanley, for Wagner’s fleet in the Strait of Gibraltar, 1731 stationed in the Mediterranean.
1732 Under command of Captain Henry Medley, 1733 at Maryland and 1734 at the Barbary Coast.
March to May 1735 repair and refit in Sheerness.
1735 Under command of Captain John Durell in the English Channel service.
1736 Under command of Captain Richard Norris for the River Tagus, Portugal, from 1737 – 38 in the Mediterranean.
May to October 1740 under refit and repair at Portsmouth.
July 1740 recommissioned under command of Captain Charles Purvis.
June 1741 under Captain George Cokburne, off Oporto, Portugal, then May 1742 under command of Captain Thorp Fowke in the North Sea.
1743 Command taken over by Captain Philip Durell and fitted out for service in the West Indies, but before sailing orders were cancelled. From December 1743 till January 1744 under repair in at Sheerness then under command of Captain Richard Chadwick for service in the North Sea.
After a few command changes she in 1746 under command of Frederick Hyde in service in the Thames Approaches.
1747 under repair at Sheerness.
July 1748 paid off. After survey she was sold for £340 on 16 March 1749.
