Al ISTIKLAL

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Oct 01, 2017 7:15 pm

Tunisia issued in 2016 one stamp for the “60th anniversary of the Army’s creation” which shows in the background of the stamp a warship. The image I have is not so clear but the same ship is depict on the FDC and comparing this with photo ‘s on the internet it must be the first warship built in Tunisia the patrol boat Al ISTIKLAL. When the stamp was issued she was not yet commissioned, so the photo of the ship after the stamp was designed must be taken during a trial in 2016.
Not much details on the Al ISTIKLAL I could find on the net.

I believe she is built by Societe de Construction Industrielle et Navale (SCIN) in Sfax for the Tunisian Navy.
When laid down I could not find but building took two year.
21 August 2017 she was launched and named Al ISTIKLAL (Independence) in the Gulf of Tunis by Minister of Defence Farhalt Horchani. (launched as given on the web-site must I believe be commissioned.)
Tonnage or displacement 80 ton, dim. 26.5 x 5.8 m,
Powered by two Rolls-Royce engines each 3,200 hp., speed 25 knots.
Range 600 mile.
Armament: 1 – 20mm cannon and two machine guns.
Accommodation for 12 crew.
