The 40c stamp shows us a barge used for the transport of cargo and people from the ships at anchor of the Christmas Island to shore.
The passengers as seen on the stamp are lifted from the barge by a crane, standing in an enclosed cage, which could during rough weather quite be an unnerving experience.
The barges were replaced in 1994 by two new barges the ROHANI and SASHA, the barges used in 1990 when the stamp was issued I could not find any info or details on.
