The block refers to « The philately of Americas », the theme of the exhibition MonacoPhil 2017. North America is represented by the unforgettable Grace Kelly (1929-1982), Hollywood star who became Princess of Monaco after marrying Prince Rainier III in 1956. The Monegasque-Brazilian inventor and artist Hercule Florence (1804-1879) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%A9rcules_Florence features South America. Brought up in Monaco, the young Florence emigrated to Brazil in 1824 and found himself taking part as a draughtsman in the Langsdorff expedition to the Mato Grosso. The inventor of Zoophonia and of Polygraphia, in 1833 Hercule Florence invented in Brazil a photographic process and was the first to use the word “Photographie”.

The miniature sheet shows us two stamps of 2.60 Euro with the portraits of Grace Kelly and Hercule Florence, in the margin a chart of North and South America, and below a Indian dugout canoe somewhere in a Brazilian waterway, the last part is a design after a watercolor made by Herrcule Florence in 1835.
