SAILING SHIPS OF THE WORLD (Grenada)

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Dec 27, 2017 6:40 pm

In 2001 Grenada issued a sheet “Sailing Ships of the World” and from the left to the right are shown:
1)English Carrack: It looks that the GREAT HARRY is depict, the Paraguay stamp issued in 1980 Gs 6 looks almost the same as this stamp: http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewt ... allery]/4/

2)Mediterranean carrack: http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewt ... ack#p11298

3)Spanish galleon: I do not believe a Spanish galleon is depict, comparing images with the stamp I believe the SANTA MARIA Columbus ship is depict she was a carrack or nao When you look at stamps with Spanish galleons you see that this type has much more rigging and sails. http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewt ... eon#p12844

4)Elizabeth crumster: the name is wrong it must be CROMSTER, http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewt ... ter#p10929

5)British East Indiaman: The stamp shows a square rigged vessel on 3 masts, with a lateen sail on the mizzen mast, under the bowsprit a spritsail with a square sail above it. http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewt ... allery]/2/

6)Clipper ship: The design on the stamp looks that she have used the FLYING CLOUD. http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewt ... =2&t=13935

7)British gun ship: By the Royal Navy not any sailing gun ship was in service, most probably the meaning is a Royal Navy vessel armed with so many guns (First rate etc.). By the Royal Navy a gunboat is the general name to a small naval vessel, well-armed and often of shallow draught for use in rivers and close inshore.

8)British flagship: It was a Royal Navy ship which carried an admiral or commander-in-chief, and flying his flag of command.

9)English Hoy: Small sturdy coaster that worked out of English Channel and North Sea ports and on navigable tributary rivers during the 15th-18th centuries. http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewt ... hoy#p10409
