Post by aukepalmhof » Tue May 08, 2018 8:56 pm

For the Bicentenary of the Uruguay Navy, Uruguay issued in 2017 a miniature sheet which shows us; CAPITAN MIRANDA see: http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewt ... allery]/7/ and the frigate URUGUAY see: http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewt ... 176#p19176

The Uruguay Post did give by this issues:

On November 15, 1817, the Uruguayan Navy was born when Artigas https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9 ... io_Artigas wrote to Juan Murphy, Officer of the Corsair La FORTUNA, with the seal of arms of the Republic. The date of this document is taken to commemorate the Day of the Navy.
Artigas considered very important the defense of the autonomy of the provincial ports, creation of a fluvial merchant marine, organization of a fluvial squadron, establishment of the war against the privateers, opening of the interior rivers to the international commerce and navigation and promulgation of the Customs Regulation.
After independence, a navy was established under Colonel Pablo Zufriategui, a veteran of Artigas and the Thirty-Three Oriental campaigns. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirty-Three_Orientals .
Although the force was very small during the Great War, it is noteworthy that the fleet was personally commanded by José "Garibaldi, who captured the Colonia del Sacramento, the Martín García Island, and Gualeguaychú.The flagship during this period was the corvette SARANDI.
To the pride of the Orientals, the Navy wrote its most glorious pages under the command of Rear Admiral Juan José Zorrilla on February 9, 1973, defending democratic institutions, attacked by the military horde lashed by the communist party and the Uruguayan left.
On such a special date, we salute our National Navy.
