MANGANESE LOADING IN FORARI

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Jun 01, 2018 8:22 pm

In 1963 the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) issued two stamps (English and French inscription) which shows us a cargo vessel loading manganese via a conveyor belt at Forari which is on the eastern end of Èfaté Island. The vessel is not identified. Most of this manganese was shipped to Japan. The vessel depict on the cover is the ship after which the stamp is designed, who can identify the vessel?

In 1962 the French opened there a manganese mine and this mine was closed in 1979.
In 1971 it was reported that workable deposits of manganese oxides occur over an area of 25 km² at Forari.

The Crown Agents did give that in 1952 manganese was found and in 1966 it was estimated that about 80,000 ton could be mined.
