ILHA DO MAIO

Post by shipstamps » Wed Feb 11, 2009 4:28 pm

Built on the yard of VEB Elbewerften at Boizenburg, Germany for A/S Osloagenturer, Norway.
Launched under the name JOFF
Tonnage 198 grt, 117nrt., dim. 49.6 x 10.1 x 2.85m. (draught).
Powered by a diesel engine.
Ice strengthened. She was one of 21 sisters built by this yard.
February 1972 completed.

1973 Sold to the Lys Line A/S, Norway and renamed LYS BLINK.
1979 Sold to Companhia Nacional de Navegacao ’Acra Verde’, at Cape Verde and renamed ILHA DO MAIO.
28 August 1982 she grounded at Mindelo, and although later refloated would seem to have been abandoned. The wreck was still at Mindelo, Sao Vicente in October 1998. A photo in Marine News 2003 page 369 shows her in a bad condition. Not sure if she is still around or already scrapped.
