She was ordered by the yard of Blohm & Voss in Hamburg.
23 August 1958 launched as the GORCH FOCK (A60) named after the German story and play writer Johann Wilhelm Kinau (1880 – 1916) who wrote under the pseudonym Gorch Fock

Bark rigged, sail area 1.952 square meter, later increased to 2.037 square meter.
Accommodation for 269 persons included a crew of 69 men.
17 December 1958 commissioned. Homeport Kiel, Germany. Owned and managed by the German Navy.

Used by the Deutsche Bundesmarine as a training vessel, mostly three training voyages are made every year, the shortest in the North Sea and Baltic.
During the winter months she is laid up.
