ADRIAS (L67)

HMS BORDER was ordered in Aug. 1940 by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson, and built under yard Nº J 4287 as a destroyer for the Royal Navy.
Laid down on 01-05-1941,
Launched 03-02-1942 under the name BORDER. She was renamed before completion in "ADRIAS" (L67)
She was a type 3 of the Hunt class.
Tonnage, displacement 1.050 ton standard, 1.545 tons maximum. Dim. 280 x 31.6 x 13ft (draught)
Power on two shafts 19.000 shp., max. speed 26½ knots. (the steam engine was built by Wallsend 'Slipway and Engineering Co., they were a subsidiary of Swan Hunter.
Endurance 2560 miles at 20 kn. Maximum continuous speed 25 ½ kn, with a range of 1050 miles.
Armament 4 -4 inch gun (2x2), one quadruple 2 pdrs, 3 single 20mm guns, one twin 21 inch torpedo tube. Most of this type carried two depth charges chutes, four throwers and 70 depth charges were carried.
Crew in wartime 9 officers and 155 ratings.
She was transferred to the Royal Hellenic Navy on 16-05-1942.
Completed 05-08-1942

She got some Damage at Scapa Flow in August 1942 and her work up, was delayed by repair at Wallsend until December 1942.
After an other work up period at Scapa Flow, she formed part of an escort convoy WS26 to Freetown in Jan. 1943.
Thereafter she circumnavigating Africa, and joined the 22dnd Destroyer Flotilla at Alexandria.
22-10-1943 Seriously damaged by a mine east of Calino Isl. during the Aegean campaign.
The whole of her bow forward of frame 37 completely disappeared, and her forward gun was a total loss. Her main and auxiliary engines were not damaged. Towed to Turkish territorial waters for emergency repairs at Gumusluk.
Then she was escorted by MTBs 645, 646, and 647 to Kakava Bay of Castelloriso. She arrived there.03-12-1943.
Then towed by the tug BRIGANO and under protection of the destroyers .JERVIS and PENN she was towed to Limassol under heavy air attack.
After one day at Limassol the "ADRIAS" then proceeded under her own power (the tow was found unsatisfactory due to excessive yawing of the "ADRIAS").
After a passage of 600 miles without her bow she arrived at Alexandria on 06-12-1943.

Declared as a constructive total loss, laid up at Alexandria.
After December 1944 she was laid up at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. (If she was towed or steamed under her own power to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the book did not tell).
07-10-1945 it was announced that the "ADRIAS" was to be scrapped
20-11-1945 She arrived by the scrapyard of Messrs King & Co. for demolition.
