Ave Maria

Post by shipstamps » Thu Nov 20, 2008 6:18 pm

An entirely different type of fishing boat is the subject of this stamp which shows a craft on the small lake of Pusiano, near Como, but on this occasion the flat-bottomed boat is being used for the transport of goats across the lake. A framework for a single awning at the craft's stern frames a mother and her baby. The picture is from the painting "Ave Maria on the Lake" by Segantini, dated 1882, with which he won the Rembrandt Grand Prize at the Amsterdam Exhibition of 1883. Segantini later made a second version of the painting similar to the first but much brighter.
