Indonesia issued a stamp in 1998 to commemorate the International Year of the Oceans and the signing of the “Ocean Charter” on 26 September 1998 in Menado by the Indonesian President Prof. Dr B.J.Habibie.

The stamp depicts the survey/research vessel BARUNA JAYA IV.

She is one of a class of survey and oceanographic research vessels built for the Indonesian Government and managed by Department of Technology for National Resources (BPDPT), Djakarta, Indonesia.

Built under yard No 1645 by Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie (CMN), Cherbourg.
Launched under the name BARUNA JAYA IV (KAL-IV-05)
Displacement 1.350 ton full load, Tonnage 1.184 gross, 355 net, 450 dwt., dim. 60.4 x 11.6 x 5.31m.
Powered by two 5-cyl Pielstick diesel engines, 2.990 bhp., one shaft, speed 14 knots.
Crew 37 + 26 mission crew.
02 November 1995 completed.

The class has 5 ships delivered between 1989 and 1999, the last unit may be of a slightly different design.
All are variously equipped for both hydrographic survey and oceanographic research.

Indonesia as an archipelago state which have a strong commitment to promote the sea or ocean as a common heritage through activities organized by a National Committee for the 1998 International Year of the Ocean. The National Committee is a combination for the Indonesian Navy, the Agency of technology Assessment and Implementation and the Indonesian Science Institution. All activities have been arranged to encourage Indonesian people to take care of the sea and the ocean and to exploit and explore it whilst maintaining sea environment, to protect it from a destruction efforts. Therefore the Committee defined a motto: “The Ocean Challenge, Opportunity and Prospect”. The aim is to improve public opinion, awareness, vision and perception in developing the ocean properly.

2018 In service, same name and owners Imo No 9065998.
