Built under yard No. 635 as a submarine by Scotts Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Greenock, Scotland for the Royal Navy.
06 September 1944 keel laid down.
21 November 1945 launched under the name TABARD (P 342) one of the T class submarine, group 3 built for the Royal Navy.
Displacement 1.090 ton surface, 1.575 tons submerged. Dim. 273.5 x 26.5 x 12ft., length bpp 265ft.
Powered by two diesel engines, 2.500 hp each, twin electric motors, 1.450 hp each. Twin shafts speed 15.5 knots surfaced, 9 knots submerged.
Armament 1 – 14 inch gun, 1 – 20mm AA gun, 3 – MG. 11 – 21 inch torpedo tubes, could carry 17 torpedoes.
Crew 58.
25 June 1946 commissioned.

When HMS TABARD was completed the war was over, this class of submarines were designed for mostly surface operation against Japan, but during World War II used in all theatres of war, and many were sunk.
After the war she was intended to operate against the Soviet submarines, and the submarine needed more underwater speed.
Between 1953 and 1955 HMS TABARD was cut in two and a new 20 feet midshipsection was placed, she got extra batteries, and diesel electric propulsion fitted, could now reach a submerged speed of over 15 knots.
More streamlined with a fin-type conning tower. Here after torpedo tubes removed.

1960 Lent to the Commonwealth of Australia, to provide anti submarine training for the RAN.
First refitted at the Cockatoo Island Dockyard at Sydney before she joined the 4th Submarine Squadron at Sydney in 1961.
08 May 1963 collided with the HMAS QUEENBOROUGH, off Jervis Bay NSW, Australia during an exercises, she suffered superficial damage, and a bent fin, returned to Sydney for repair.
22 March 1968 sailed from Australia via the Panama Canal, arrived Gosport 11 June.

From 1969 till 1974 moored as a static training submarine at the HMS DOLPHIN shore establishment at Fort Blockhouse, Gosport, till she was relieved by HMS ALLIANCE.

02 January 1974 sold for scrap to Cashmore.
14 March 1974 Scrapped at Newport.
