The 70c. French stamp shows the nuclear submarine Redoutable, which has a displacement of 7,900 tons on the surface, and 9,000 tons submerged. Length overall is 420 ft., beam 348 ft., draft 32.8 ft. She has one pressurised water-cooled reactor. Main engines consist of two turbo-alternators and one electric motor. Auxiliary propulsion is provided by one diesel. Surface speed 20 knots, submerged, over 25 knots. Missiles: 16 tubes amidships, Polaris type I.C.B.Ms, with a range of 1,900 miles. Four torpedo tubes. Her complement, consisting of two alternating crews, is 135 (14 officers, 121 ratings). She is France's first nuclear-powered submarine, ballistic missile-armed, and her submerged cruise duration is three months. The diesel engine has bunkers for a range of 5,000 miles. The Redoutable was laid down at the Cherbourg Naval Dockyard on March 30, 1964 and was launched March 29, 1969, becoming operational 1970.

In 1958 the French President Charles de Gaulle took the decision to grant France a nuclear deterrence. This finalized with the Military Program Law 1960 – 1964.
16 May 1963 the first nuclear submarine was ordered.
30 March 1964 keel laid down on the French Navy Yard at Cherbourg.
29 March 1967 launched under the name Le REDOUTABLE (S 611), she was the first unit of this class of which six were built.
Displacement 8.080 ton surfaced, 9.000 tons submerged. Dim.128.70 x 10.60 x 10m. (draught)
Powered by 1 nuclear reactor supplying steam to steam turbines, 16.000 hp., one screw, speed surfaced 20 knots submerged 25+ knots.
Auxiliary engines 2 Semt-Pielstick diesel, each 450 kW.
Armament: 16 launchers for M-1 MSBS ballistic missiles, 1974 replaced by M-2 MSBS missiles, later replaced by M-20 MSBS missiles.
Four torpedo tubes 21.7 inch, carried 18 torpedoes.
May 1969 she carried out her first dive. Maximum diving depth 300 meters.
Crew 135.
01 December 1971 commissioned.

After completing stationed at Brest.
During her 20 year career she carried out 51 patrols.
13 December 1991 decommissioned.
Now a museum ship open for the public since 2000 at Cité de la Mer, Cherbourg.
