D'Entrecasteaux

Post by shipstamps » Mon Nov 10, 2008 5:09 pm

To commemorate the centenary of French administration in New Caledonia and dependencies a set of four stamps was issued by the colonial post office in September 1923 in different designs. The 1 F.50 stamp depicts Admiral d'Entrecastreaux with the frigates Esperance and Recherche. The Admiral surveyed the outline of the coast of New Caledonia in 1791 with these two ships. The Esperance, a frigate of 500 tons, armed with 12 pieces and 12 swivel guns, was Flagship of the surveying expedition.
