EUROPA tall ship 1911

Post by shipstamps » Fri Oct 24, 2008 4:48 pm

She was built by the H.C. Stiakeren shipyard at Hamburg in 1911 for the town/state Hamburg, initially as a merchant training ship under the name SENATOR BROCKES but later converted in a light ship at the River Elbe.
First in the position of ELBE 4 until 1914. (near Cuxhaven)
From 1916 till 1918 was she in use as a pilot station on the River Elbe.
From 1918 until 1936 in the ELBE 3 position on the River Elbe.
From October 1942 was she under German Navy control in the Baltic.
From July 1945 anchored in the ELBE 2 position until she was decommissioned. On her hull was painted ELBE 2 RES (reserve).
1987 Sold to Smit Tall Ships B.V., Amsterdam and converted to a sailing vessel at the Zouthaven at Amsterdam.
The design for the converting was made by Andre Hoek, the old German light ships anchored on the lee shore were designed as good sailing ships, and rigged as a three mast schooner. When she got in trouble it was always possible to reach the safety of open water under sail.
After she was converted to a barque she was commissioned on 14 September 1994 by Hedy d’Ancona (a Euro M.P.), and renamed EUROPA.
She is lavishly converted, and has accommodation for 50 passengers in two, four and six person’s cabins, when making daytrips she has accommodation for 100 passengers. Crew between 6 and 8, and some cadets of nautical schools or the navy. Used as a training ship world wide with paying working guests
1994 Tonnage given as 303 gross, dim 55.10 x 7.45 x 4.50m. (draught), length bpp. 39.70m.
Sail area 1.020m².
Two Carterpillar diesels each 420 bhp., one DAF diesel for the bowthruster.
She regularly takes part in regatta’s and Tall Ship races.
2007 Still sailing under the same name.

Chad issued 2018 a miniature sheet depicting “tall ships”, the ship depicted on the left is the Dutch bark EUROPA, the flag flying is the Dutch flag.
The tall ship on the right, the only tall ship I can find photos of under full sail with stud- or studding-sails is also the EUROPA.

The ship in the foreground in the margin with the Sydney Opera House is so far not identified.
