Built as a ferry under yard No. 581 by Laird Bross, Birkenhead, U.K. for the Great Western Railway Co. (GWR), Milford, U.K.
06 June 1891 launched under the name IBEX.
Tonnage 1.062 gross, dim. 265.0 x 32.6 x 14.2ft , draught 11.1ft.
Powered by two 6-cyl. triple expansion steam engines, 4.184 ihp., twin screws, speed 19 knots.
Accommodation for 600 passengers, of which 210 passengers got a berth.
August 1891 delivered, building cost £57.000.

07 September 1891 sailed for her maiden voyage from Southampton to Guernsey, she made the crossing in 3 hour and 35 minutes.

She grounded in 1897 on Noirmontaise Rock off Jersey. She sailed on Good Friday from St Peter Port, Guernsey bound for St Helier, Jersey, she left before her rival the FREDERICA, which was a faster vessel, and she slowly caught up with the IBEX.
The captain of the IBEX slowly altered his course to the shore, when he near the light of Corbiere was, to obstruct the passing of the FREDERICA. The captain on board the FREDERICA noticed the course change, and altered his course, and passed inside the rocks. The IBEX to near to the rocks grounded, and got leakage. The passengers were disembarked, and a few days later the IBEX was refloated, and towed to St Helier by the ferry REINDEER.
After repair again in service.

On 05 January 1900 she grounded on the rocks of Platte Fougeress near Guernsey, about 3 miles north of St Peter Port, she sank after 15 minutes on even keel. Two crewmembers lost their life by the sinking.
After a lengthy salvage operation by a salvage company from Hamburg was she refloated, and after a temporary repair at St Sampsons Harbour, towed to Birkenhead for repair and an overhaul.

During World War I remained in the service between the U.K and the Channel Islands.
In this time she came in collision with the freighter ALETTA of the GWR, the freighter sank off Weymouth.

After the war in service till 1925, then sold for scrap the same year to R.S.Hayes Ltd., after she was scrapped at Sharpness.

The stamp of 12p of Guernsey depicts the IBEX alongside the GWR terminal at Guernsey.
