Between 1953/54 the Dutch yard Koninklijke Maatschappij “de Schelde’ at Vlissingen (Flushing), Netherlands, delivered three polar ships to the Russian Government.
One of this ships was the OB built under yard No. 276.
10 October 1953 launched.
Tonnage 7.544 gross, 4.278 net, 7.503 dwt. Dim. 129.5 x 18.8 x 8.5m (draught).
Diesel electric, by four 8-cyl Schelde/Sulzer diesels driving four generators connected to electric motors, manufactured by De Schelde, 7.000 hp., one shaft, speed 13 knots.
Ice strengthened.
26 June 1954 delivered.

From 1955 till 1958 under command of Capt. Ivan Man.
During the summer of 1956 the OB and LENA (a sistership) broke the pack-ice belt of the Davistrait,
She transported the Russian Antarctic expedition under command of M.M. Somov to the Russian base MIRNY that was built there for the International Geophysical Year 1955/56.
During her out and return voyage of together 20.000 mile the scientist on board carried out scientist observations in the open ocean and on the coast of the Antarctic continent.

Thereafter used in a shuttle service as a supply vessel between the U.S.S.R and the Russian Antarctic basis camps.

M.M. Somov (1908-1973), an oceanographer, polar explorer, doctor of geographical sciences, and hero of the Soviet Union (1951). He captained the expeditions: Sever (1948-1949) (Central Arctic air exploration); the anchorless station Severny Polus – 2 (1950-1957); and the first Soviet Antarctic expedition (1955 – 1957).
Somov was one of the pioneers who discovered the submarine ridge in the Northern Ocean (1948). He was the author of works on the ice regime of the Arctic seas, and ice forecast. The stamp issued by Russia in 2000 features the picture of Somov.
In the left part of the stamp there is a picture of the diesel electric ship OB, which took part in scientific exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The upper part of the stamp features An-2 aircraft on the background of the outline map of Antarctica, with a dot showing the location of the Mirniy Observatory.
