De Zeven Provincien

Post by shipstamps » Sun Sep 14, 2008 4:57 pm

25c plus 15c; De Zeven Provincien was built at Rotterdam in 1665 at the wharf of the Board of Admiralty on the River Maas, by Van der Temple. She was armed with 80 guns, comprising 12 36-pounders, 16 24-pounders, 14 10-pounders, 12 12-pounders and 26 6-pounders. Admiral de Ruyter chose her as his flagship in 1607. The stamp design is based on a painting by Van de Velde the Elder showing officers proceeding to a council of war aboard the de Ruyter's flagship before the Four-Days Battle. The stamp designer has added the gunsmoke for effect; it is naturally not in the original painting. De Zeven Provincien was scrapped in 1694. She has previously appeared on a Netherlands stamp issued in 1957.
