GLADAN FALKEN

The GLADAN was built as a 2-masted fore and aft schooner at the Örlogsvarvet in Stockholm for the Swedish Navy.
1946 Ordered.
28 May 1946 keel laid down.
14 November 1946 launched under the name HMS GLADAN (Kite) sailing No S01. One sister HMS FALKEN.
Displacement 220 ton. Dim. 39.30 x 7.30 x 4.2m. (draught), length on deck 34.30m., length bpp. 28.30m.

One 6-cyl Scania Vabis diesel, 128 hp.
Crew 15 men and 38 cadets.
Carried around 60 ton permanent ballast.
02 June 1947 commissioned.

Both ships were designed by Tore Herlin, and were a replacement for the full riggers JARRAMAS and NAJADEN.
She are used to train navy cadets and sail also with civilian organizations and with volunteer defences organizations.
Another important mission for them is to represent the Swedish Navy and show their presence in other countries and at home in Sweden.
She takes also part in Tall Ship Races.

Between 1969 and 1970 both ships were modernized and received new diesel generators.
In the winter of 1994 -1995 she underwent their 6-year overhaul; the engine room was rebuilt with new engines.

The FALKEN was built on the same yard for the Swedish Navy.
12 January 1946 ordered.
14 November 1946 laid down.
12 June 1947 launched under the name HMS FALKEN ( Falcon) sailing No S02.
01 October 1947 commissioned.

Other details are the same as GLADAN.

2008 Both ships are in service, and used by the Swedish Navy.

The FALKEN is also shown on a stamp of Sweden issued 1972 55 ore sg 692, scot 932.
