Kathleen and Uakon

Post by shipstamps » Mon Sep 08, 2008 4:02 pm

The two small wooden sailing sloops of the Turks and Caicos Islands shown in the two stamps were built at the Cockburn Harbour yard, in the South Caicos, to run a regular mail; cargo and passenger service between the Turks Islands and the Caicos Islands. The sloop Kathleen, on the 21/2d. stamp, carried the inter-island mail, together with any cargo and passengers for over 20 years. She was built in 1927 and was of 11 registered tons. Her owner was Mr. Cleophas H. Durham, of Cockburn Harbour. The vessel was destroyed during the hurricane of 1945. Her place has been taken by the Caicos sloop Uakon, built in 1949, and of 12 tons. She is owned by Joseph and Lillian Walkin, of Cockburn Harbour, South Caicos, and shown on the 2/- stamp . SG225 ,248
